Beyond Point & Shoot Logo

Have a passion for digital photography? Attend two Beyond Point & Shoot Photo Workshops presented by a local expert. Get inspired by checking out the latest Library materials about photography and viewing last years 2013 winning photos. Use your new skills to enter the Beyond Point & Shoot Photo Contest. Entering the contest is optional. Workshops and contest are for adults and youth aged 13 and older. Programs are jointly offered by the Library and the Centerville Arts Commission. May the best photos win!

Photo Workshops (8/2/14)

1. The Basics of Point & Shoot
Date: Saturday, August 2
Time: 10:00 AM – Noon
Location: Centerville Library
Presented By: Ed Ponikwia Learn how to improve your photography using point and shoot digital cameras, tablets and phone cameras. Topics covered include: camera settings, lighting, focus, composition, shooting modes and how to avoid common mistakes and take better pictures.

2. Beyond Point & Shoot
Date: Saturday, August 2
Time: 1:30 – 3:30 PM
Location: Centerville Library
Presented By: Ed Ponikwia Learn about different types of cameras and the pros & cons of each, camera settings (including ISO, white balance, aperture, shutter speed), lenses, exposure, tricky lighting, macro photography and more. In other words, after you have taken some great photos, what's next?

Photo Contest (8/1/14 - 8/28/14)

  • You must live in the Miami Valley Ohio region (Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Warren counties) to enter the contest.
  • Two age groups:
    • Youth - 13 to 17
    • Adult - 18 and older
    • Children under 13 are not eligible to enter.
  • Competition categories:
    1. Local Landmark (Only landmark photos taken within the boundaries of Centerville or Washington Township, Ohio)
    2. People
    3. Place or Travel (locations outside the boundaries of Centerville or Washington Township)
    4. Nature (weather, animals, landscapes, mountains, plants, etc.)
    5. Black & White or Artistic
  • Limits: One entry per category.
  • NEW! A photo may only be submitted once; i.e. not to multiple categories.
  • NEW! A photo may not have any text or graphics superimposed onto the photo surface.
  • Photo must be taken by submitter.
  • If under 18, you must obtain permission to enter the contest.
  • All photos must be in JPG format, although photographs may have been shot on film, slide, or with a digital camera.
  • Hard copy photos will not be accepted and will not be returned.
  • Entries must be submitted online using the official online entry form starting at 8 AM on August 1, 2014 (link visible below when contest is live).
  • Contest closes 7:59 AM EDT on August 28, 2014.
  • Submission of online entries is final. Photos cannot be resubmitted.
  • Washington-Centerville Public Library and the City of Centerville reserve the non-exclusive right to use the photographs at their discretion.
  • The photographer is responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions if his/her photograph includes an identifiable individual.
  • No entry fee.
  • Entries will not be returned.
  • Presenters, judges, and employees of the City of Centerville, Centerville Arts Commission, Washington-Centerville Public Library and their immediate families are not eligible to enter.
Get Inspired: People's Choice Online Voting: (9/10/14 - 9/16/14)
  • The public will have an opportunity to vote online for one People's Choice Award.
  • Vote for your favorite photo
  • One vote per person
  • Link to vote will be visible below when voting is live.
  • Voting opens Wednesday, September 10 at 8 AM.
  • Voting closes on Tuesday, September 16 at 4 PM.
Judging: (9/10/14 - 9/16/14)
  • Three local judges:
  • The judges will choose one first place and one second place winner per category and age group.
  • Judging criteria:
    • Use of Lighting
    • Use of Color or Contrast
    • Visual Impact
    • Use of Exposure/Focus (effective use of blur or sharpness)
  • All decisions of our judges are final.
  • Winners will be notified via email by September 20.

Awards Ceremony (10/26/14)
  • Winning photographs will be unveiled at the Centerville Art Gallery located in the Centerville Police Headquarters, 155 W. Spring Valley Road, Centerville.
  • Sunday, October 26, 2:30 - 3:30 PM
  • Awards presented at 3 PM
  • First Place Prize - framed and matted photo displayed on wall during exhibit
  • Second Place Prize - matted photo shown in display case during exhibit
  • If a photo is selected as the People's Choice Winner and a category winner, it will be single framed.
  • Everyone is welcome to attend!

Exhibition (10/26/14 - 12/31/14)
  • Exhibit opens Sunday, October 26 at 2:30 P.M.
  • Centerville Art Gallery located in the Centerville Police Headquarters, 155 W. Spring Valley Road, Centerville.
  • Winning photographs on display for 9 weeks!
  • Free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
  • Gallery staffed 24-hours per day. Exhibit may be viewed anytime, day or night.
  • Winners receive their framed/matted photos after the exhibit is closed. Exhibit photos must be picked up by owner no later than Thursday, January 8, at the Centerville Municipal Building located at 100 West Spring Valley Road.
  • The City of Centerville and Washington-Centerville Public Library are not responsible for damage that may occur during the exhibition.
