Two local artists whose forms are deeply rooted in the Early Middle Ages will take up residence in the libraries throughout the month of February, 2008 to create medieval works of art on location. Visit Woodbourne and Centerville Library each week to watch their work progress in this exciting program sponsored by the Dorothy R. Yeck Endowment for the Arts.
Hilary Neu is a native Daytonian who recently graduated from The College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she studied Art Education for K-12 and concentrated in lettering and calligraphy.
She currently works as a substitute teacher at local schools in the Cincinnati area. Her love of the calligraphic arts and passion for teaching children come together in the Series of the Scribe.
Hilary Neu will work on-site at Centerville Library each Saturday in February, 2008 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM.
Jeffrey T. James was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wright State University, where he focused on sculpture. Jeff has taught at Rosewood Fine Arts Center in Kettering, Ohio and was the Director of Ceramics at Middletown Fine Arts Center. Currently Jeff exhibits his work throughout Ohio.
For the past several years, Jeff's focus has been sculptures in polymer clay, but his interests span several media. Over the years he has become a skilled craftsman in scrimshaw, pottery, leatherwork, sewing, knife making, wire wrapping, mold making and casting. Frequently Jeff incorporates his multi-media experience into his works.
Jeff is inspired by mythos and tribal societies. He is drawn to monolithic forms, ancient alphabets and petroglyphs. He strives to capture the gesture of his characters in his figurative sculputures. Jeff's work has been featured at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire and the Ohio Renaissance Festival, and can be seen daily at the Village Artisan's Gallery in Yellow Springs.
Jeffrey James will work on-site at Woodbourne Library in February, 2008 each Sunday from 1:00 - 3:00 PM, and each Thursday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.
