"The Battle of Life"

Life is a constant battle, full of struggles to succeed, to become what one wants to be, what one can be. So many people have won, have found that happy medium where they can live comfortably, and get through life with a smile on their face. But some have failed.

What can we do, as mere teens, to ensure that we do not fail, but succeed? Not only do we want to survive these unstable years, but we also want to thrive. As a plant thrives with sunlight, earth, and water, so can we, but the resources we need are a bit different. Instead of sunlight shining down on us, we need a role model; someone to look up to, someone whose shining example can help us to grow; Someone like Dottie Yeck.

Dorothy R. Yeck is a wonderful example of a role model. She gave off such a glow of happiness and optimism that everyone around her noticed. Dottie Yeck helped construct the original Woodbourne Library, donated a beautiful “Storytime” sculpture to the library, helped with children’s programs and story times, and served as President of the Board of Trustees of Washington-Centerville Public Library. We all need someone like Dottie Yeck to guide us in the search for success and happiness.

Instead of living in soil, we must stay firmly planted in our beliefs and interests. We need to find something wholesome that we enjoy. In my personal life, I have found that music brings me pleasure and delight. I began taking piano when I was four years old, and violin when I was eight. Each minute spent playing these instruments has been worth the effort. When I give a performance, I can tell that my audience enjoys the playing, and that makes my joy even greater. Other things that I have enjoyed are volunteering at a Leukemia walk, playing sports with my friends, and attending a church that makes me feel happy and complete.

In place of being constantly sprinkled in water so the plant can grow, we should continually remind ourselves of our past. If there were any advice I could give, it would be to learn from one’s mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, but to ensure that they are never repeated, one must look back and realize what they have done wrong. One of the most common mistakes is giving up. Sometimes, when a person meets a problem, it’s easier to just give up and try something else. Whether the trouble lies in sports, school, or social relationships, don’t give up. The struggle will be worth the reward, and more will be learned along the way. By looking to the past, a better future is created, making an improved life, and in the process, enhancing the lives of many others.

The great thing about the battle of life is that everyone can win. With the right resources and guidance, anyone can succeed in this tremendous, ongoing fight for happiness.
